Tiger Slew and the Pend Orielle River

I always love traveling up the Pend Orielle River to Washington States northeastern corner. The last leg of highway 20 that follows the river from Newport is one of the most beautiful I’ve driven and I never get tired of it. Here are few shots along the way and inside the Tiger Slew.

“Swing like Tarzan”
Canopy Tours Costa Rican Style

” Nothing was more exhilarating than the Tarzan swing ” Swinging through the air like  Tarzan .… and zip-lining the old-growth jungle of the Arenal volcano”.

If adventure seeking is what turns you on,  this is definitely one thrill you’re not going to want to miss when in the Arenal volcano region of Costa Rica!

Jonathan and I were staying at  the Hotel Sueno Dorado, a beautiful roadside accommodation just outside of the friendly little town of Fortuna, Costa Rica. No reservations were necessary at Hotel Sueno Dorado and it ran about $35 U.S. a night per person . The family owned hotel consisted mostly of small cabins and offered a great view from the base of the magnificent cone shaped Arenal volcano.

The grounds were lined with date trees and huge spider plants that look like something out of a storybook…. giant replica’s of houseplants at home in Northwestern U.S. There were mango and palm trees surrounding the volcanic hot springs pool just outside our cabin. Warm and pleasant indeed.

We were enjoying a complimentary breakfast of local cuisine that included eggs, rice, black beans and fruit, when the owner approached us with a special deal on the zip line tour located nearby. The offer was $55 U.S. which seemed like a great deal for two & a half hours of adventure up on the side of this amazing ecological playground. The Eco-Glide zip line shuttle picked us up at 10:45 sharp and we were on our way to the canopy tour site.

After being harnessed up with safety straps and helmets, we got a quick lesson on a small cable set-up. This was our short training before we made our way up the side of the volcano. On the truck ride up we saw a two toed and a three toed sloth, as well as several birds including the white hawk and a toucan. Howler monkeys could be heard in the distanc and the feel of a real jungle permeated my body and mind !

The jungle on the side of the Arenal volcano is a perfect location for a world class zip line tour. Once we were up the side of the mountain and into the old growth jungle, we were ready to take on the 12 cables and an (optional) Tarzan swing mid-way down. The adrenaline ran on every ride while clipping along from platform to platform. Some were 80 to 100 feet in the air and we made speeds of about 35 miles an hour.

Nothing was more exhilarating than the Tarzan swing ! I was first in line and had no indication of what I was about to experience. I was edged closer and closer to end of the platform. My belly was pressed against the gate when it flung open….. and down I went…..and then up….way up… into the top of the jungle canopy ! Swinging back and forth until coming to a stop on the platform below. I cant wait to do it again !

The Tarzan swing was the halfway point so we continued on down the volcano with the last 6 cables. One of which was 1400 feet long and offered a magnificent view of the volcano foothills and valley below. It was truly breathtaking !

When we arrived at the final landing platform, it was just a short walk to the home base where we were given a beverage of our choice. We were also given an opportunity to purchase a CD of photos that were being taken during our adventure.

One couple that was in our group claimed that this zip line adventure was the finest they had experienced out of about thirty different places around the world they had tried ! I just thought to myself….this one is going to be hard to top !

So if you find yourself in the Lake Arenal area of Costa Rica and you like a great adventure…. be sure to find the “Eco Glide” canopy tour and brace yourself for an experience you won’t soon forget !

The tours run daily and are easy to get lined up with.

A Road Runs Through it

“A Road Runs through it”

You can feel the rumble and hear the roar of a Harley Davidson motorcycle as it rolls through the super friendly little bar called “Cruisers” located at State line, Idaho.
Cruisers 5
“A road runs through it” is the unusual attribute of this motorcycle bar that literally has a road running in one end ……….and out the other !!!

Cruisers 2

Cruisers 10

Situated in the beautiful Spokane Valley where Eastern Washington meets the Idaho panhandle, you can sit back, relax, and check out the motorcycles roll through while enjoying your favorite beverage. Whether you want to play pool, listen to live music, or just shoot the breeze with friends and acquaintances, Cruisers is an awesome little place to do it at.

On the weekend before Sturgis, the worlds largest motorcycle rally in South Dakota, Cruisers holds a “Mini Sturgis” event where locals and folks from all over the Northwest stop in on their way through to the popular National motorcycle gathering.

This one day event at Cruisers has a mini flea market where you’ll find jewelry, leather goods, knives, local art, patch sewing, and a variety of food and beverages. You’ll also find various games including the splash tank or biker ladies at the arm wrestling table !!
Cruisers 4
Outside in back there’s a stage with a nice lawn to hang out on. If your needing to get some ink done you can do that right here too at Cruisers. Dirty Harry’s tattoo parlor and body piercing shop is right next door and has its own entry from the bar.

You can bring your “cool car” out for “cool car Tuesdays” or ride the bike out for “Thunder Thursdays”. A very friendly little local hangout with a unique twist.

So if your ever riding through Interstate 90 at the Washington -Idaho border…be sure to swing in to “Cruisers” at Stateline, Idaho and take “the road that runs through it“ !!!

Cruisers is located at 6105 West Seltice Way, Stateline, Idaho 83854. They are open daily from 11am to midnight and will stay open later on the weekends or anytime if your party is rolling! You can also call ahead at (208) 773-4706 for details on special upcoming events.
